SEO Shootout

Alrighty,

time to de-mystify the whole “SEO” thing: over the last few weeks there have been quite a few SEO products in the Warrior-forum special offer section, and when you look closely, they all have the same underlying philosophy (ha, gotcha, you have to watch the video to find out what that philosophy is;-)

Ok, seriously: SEO is not hard, and pretty much all SEO courses follow the same principle, so the question is: is there any point buying one course over another?

The answer is: the biggest differences are:

  1. are you doing this for a real ‘money’ site (in which case you’d take a very different approach than you’d take for an autoblog that may or may not get slapped) and
  2. what’s worth more to you: your time or your money?

All the 3 courses I looked at (ah, I guess I should tell you what they are:

  1. Stuck in Traffic by Chris James
  2. SEO Knockout by Jerome 007
  3. Advanced Backlinking Strategies by Markus D)

PS: just some food for thought: you keep hearing that Panda killed the mini/micro-sites and that you need big, bulky sites. (almost) total hogwash if you ask me.

Here’s why:

yes, big, bulky sites (aka: the authority site) are nice because they have authority in the eyes of Google, you get visitors for all kinds of keywords you never thought of etc. However, building a proper authority site is a real undertaking.

Meaning: lots of people take shortcuts, resort to auto-blogging, outsourced (cheap, and often nasty content) (that’s “cheap ‘n nasty” in the British sense, not nasty as in “evil”).

But, because you are building an authority site, hopefully over time you’ll have lots of visitors, which is great, right?

Well, lots of visitors typically also means that Google is starting to take note and at some point may well send over a human visitor for a human review… and if your site ain’t up to Google’s standards, or the reviewer is just having a bad day and your site is only so-so, then it may well be good-bye authority site…

Having a lot of small sites that only attract a few hundred visitors a month on the other hand is very unlikely to attract Google’s attention, they’re just too busy looking at the big sites.

My personal experience is that from around 300 daily visitors (on a site that’s Adsense monetized) I’m getting a happy “we’ve reviewed your site” postcard with suggestions on how to improve it. My little “under the radar sites” don’t get that level of traffic, and neither are they getting human reviews.

Moral of the story: for ‘hands-off’ affiliate sites, I’m quite happy keeping them at the mini/micro level, optimize for one keyword or two and live with the fact that I’m not getting tons more traffic due to being ‘an authority’.

For my main money sites, yes, they’re all about authority, and it’s never cheap/outsourced content, auto-this or auto-that…

PPS: right now I’m testing the ALN service recommended by Markus D, so give me 30 days and I’ll post an update on if/how much of a difference it’s making.
